Live tribute session 45: Jazz at Massey Hall by The Quintet
"Jazz at Massey Hall" isn't credited to a specific band, but rather to "The Quintet." That's because this 1953 live recording captured a truly unique moment in jazz history. Here's why this album is so legendary:
All-Star Lineup: The Quintet was Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. These are all titans of bebop, a fast-paced and innovative style of jazz. This was the only time these five musicians ever played together as a unit, and it was the last meeting of Parker and Gillespie captured on record.
Unexpected Circumstances: The concert, held at Massey Hall in Toronto, wasn't a sell-out. The night of the performance coincided with a major boxing match, keeping many away. Despite this, and Parker reportedly showing up without his instrument (having to borrow a plastic alto), the energy and talent on stage created magic.
Preserved Legacy: Thankfully, Charles Mingus recorded the performance and released it on his own label a few years later. Though there were some overdubs added in post-production, the raw energy of the performance shines through.
