Live tribute session 48: Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock
In 1973, Herbie Hancock dropped an album called Head Hunters that totally changed the jazz game. Instead of the super out-there stuff he'd been doing, this album was all about funky grooves and infectious beats. Think James Brown meets jazz with a sprinkle of synthesizers (which were pretty new at the time).
Head Hunters wasn't just some critic's darling, it actually became the best-selling jazz album ever (for a while at least). Sure, some jazz snobs might have scoffed, but everyone else loved getting down to these funky jams.
This album's influence is still huge today. It basically invented jazz fusion, and tons of musicians across all sorts of genres, from funk to hip-hop, owe it a debt. Tracks like "Chameleon" are classics, with Herbie tickling the keys on his electric piano like nobody's business. Even his old song "Watermelon Man" got a funky makeover on this album.
