Tribute 12 - Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane

  • Long Waits Jazz 5 Nguyen Quang Bich Ha Noi Vietnam (map)

Ornette Coleman was an American jazz saxophonist, trumpeter, violinist, and composer. He is considered one of the most important and influential jazz musicians of the 20th century.

Coleman was born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1930. He began playing the alto saxophone at a young age and quickly showed a talent for improvisation. In the 1950s, he moved to New York City, where he began to develop his own unique style of jazz, which he called "free jazz".

Free jazz is characterized by its atonal melodies, free-form improvisation, and unconventional use of harmony. It was a radical departure from the traditional jazz of the time, and it was met with resistance from many critics and musicians. However, Coleman persevered, and his music eventually gained acceptance and acclaim.

Coleman released over 50 albums during his career, and he collaborated with many other jazz musicians, including Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Eric Dolphy. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2007, and he was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame in 1996.

Coleman died in 2015 at the age of 85. He is considered one of the most important and influential jazz musicians of all time, and his music continues to inspire and challenge musicians today.

Bao Long will be leading a band in a tribute session to Ornette Coleman at Long Waits on Friday 29 Sep and Saturday 30 Sep. Music starts from 8.30pm. The band will perform most songs in the album The Shape of Jazz to Come.

The album was recorded with Coleman's quartet, which consisted of Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The music on the album is characterized by its atonal melodies, free-form improvisation, and unconventional use of harmony.

The album was met with mixed reviews upon its release. Some critics praised Coleman's originality and creativity, while others dismissed the music as chaotic and unintelligible. However, the album has since been recognized as a masterpiece, and it has influenced many other jazz musicians.
